Internet de las cosas genera valor a toda empresa

La transformación digital de las empresas pasa por una herramienta que gana fuerza entre los empresarios del mundo y que se populariza en las nuevas generaciones: internet de las cosas (IoT, por sus siglas en inglés).

Precisamente, uno de los líderes globales que promueve este concepto, experto y autor británico, Kevin Ashton, estuvo esta semana en Medellín como conferencista en Innovation Land 2017, evento organizado por la Asociación Nacional de Empresarios de Colombia (Andi) y la Alcaldía de Medellín, que este año llegó a su quinta versión.

Actualmente está radicado en Austin (Texas – EE. UU.) como empresario en los negocios de alta tecnología.

Ashton habló en exclusiva con EL COLOMBIANO para desmitificar algunas ideas equivocadas sobre el IoT y reforzar otras que sí tienen toda la validez para que los empresarios antioqueños apropien esta herramienta competitiva.

¿Cómo define usted de manera simple el IoT?

“Una definición sencilla es saber usar la conexión a internet con los computadores, de modo que trabajen juntos para agregar valor a un proceso. En el siglo XX los computadores eran pesados y conectados por cables para guardar información. Era algo limitado. Pero a mediados de la década de los 90 se consolidó el internet y ya en este siglo XXI la combinación de ambos hace la diferencia. Ahora los computadores reúnen información del mundo físico y real, lo que antes no se podía hacer. Capturan millones de datos: comportamiento del clima, ubicaciones exactas de una persona, mapas, solo por citar algunos elementos”.

¿Qué pretende desmitificar?

“Una idea distorsionada del IoT es tener una cocina inteligente en la casa, o conectar los electrodomésticos del hogar en línea. Al no estar conectado con otros no agrega valor. Por ejemplo, una persona necesita para su trabajo conocer cómo está el tráfico de su ciudad y lo hace con el GPS de su celular, pero igual está conectado con muchas más personas. Puede interactuar, tomar decisiones. Esa es la diferencia.

Igual ocurre para determinar la tendencia de un consumidor, sus intereses de compra. El internet de las cosas transforma la forma de hacer las cosas, mediante la información. Captura sensaciones del mundo, las almacena en tiempo real, en línea y sin necesidad de cables y equipos pesados”.

Pero hay gente que cree que es una moda…

“El internet permite conectar datos en red para llevar información al ser humano. Esto funciona y tiene sentido porque hay una red interconectada. Es como el sistema nervioso conectado a un cerebro. Eso no es una moda. El IoT permite transformar procesos manufactureros, por ejemplo. Hay personas que creen que solo es tendencia en compañías de Estados Unidos o de Alemania o de cualquier otro país desarrollado. El IoT es una de las principales tecnologías del siglo XXI y es para todos”.

¿Una empresa requiere altas inversiones para implementarlo?

“La tecnología busca ser cada vez más simple y sencilla, con menor costo. Por ejemplo, con teléfonos inteligentes se pueden conectar a equipos de hardware de la empresa, mediante software diseñado para ello. Eso reduce costos. Se puede comenzar a pequeña escala. Uno de los peligros para las grandes compañías es querer incorporar el IoT con miles de millones de dólares invertidos, pero eso no funciona así. El primer desafío de las empresas es saber capturar la información. Sigue su análisis para saber cómo usarla de manera correcta”.

¿Puede darme algunos indicadores de eficiencia con su uso?

“Es difícil comprometerse con un número o porcentaje exacto. Se trata es de una transformación masiva. Piense en la sofisticación de la robótica. En el siglo pasado existían robots en algunas empresas pero su función era limitada. Para este siglo se tiene mayor funcionalidad porque los robots y las máquinas son más inteligentes: la interconexión de datos en una red única permite la automatización y por eso son más inteligentes”.

¿Pero en cifras concretas hay algo representativo?

“Por ejemplo, en Estados Unidos se utilizaba mano de obra en algunos procesos productivos que valían 7,5 dólares la hora, pero con el IoT los costos bajan a 33 centavos de dólar. Eso es eficiencia en las empresas, pero cada proceso tiene su particularidad. Ya lo vemos en la experiencia de Uber, que combina la identificación satelital con el smartphone para ofrecer un mejor servicio. Ya no se toma un taxi llamando a una línea de teléfono y teniendo que saber la dirección exacta”.

¿Qué otro ejemplo tiene con el uso de IoT?

“La semifinal entre Alemania y Brasil en la Copa Mundo de 2014. Los alemanes identificaron las debilidades del equipo brasileño con miles de datos recopilados de manera previa, gracias al internet de las cosas. Tomaron las mejores decisiones y supieron descifrar las debilidades del rival de manera contundente. Plantearon una estrategia ganadora que pronto los puso a ganar 5-0 y al final ganar con un 1-7 histórico”.

¿Qué mensaje le deja a los empresarios de Medellín?

“El IoT genera valor en cualquier parte, en cualquier ciudad y país. Es decir, si el empresario lo usa en Medellín podrá llevar su información a cualquier parte, conectándose con el mundo. El empresario a veces piensa que su mejor desarrollo es para clientes locales, cercanos. Pretendo que los empresarios y emprendedores de Medellín usen el internet de las cosas para mejorar sus procesos y productos, conectándose con el mundo, llevando este concepto a la universidad y que se piense desde el desarrollo del prototipo con esta visión. Esa es la gran diferencia.

Adicionalmente, decirles a los innovadores que es importante la tenacidad para sacar adelante los proyectos de desarrollo. La diferencia entre los innovadores exitosos y todos los demás es que los innovadores siguen fallando hasta que les salgan las cosas. Tienen que ser perseverantes y apasionados por lo que están haciendo. Así las cosas, esa visión global les permitirá sacar adelante sus proyectos”.
